Teaching resources
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, CEL lab members Robert Heilmayr and Albert Garcia re-designed their lower-division, undergraduate “Introduction to Environmental Economics” class (syllabus) for flipped, remote instruction. In the process, they developed teaching materials that can facilitate an active learning experience for in-person, remote or hybrid learning environments. The course seeks to inspire an interest in environmental economics among students who care deeply about the environment, but have minimal prior experience with economics. To achieve this, the course integrates asynchronous lectures with economic games and topical case studies. The course roughly follows the environmental microeconomics concepts covered in the excellent text Markets and the Environment, by Keohane and Olmstead. We’ve made these course materials publicly accessible in the hopes that they can be integrated into other courses. Please let us know if you have any suggestions for how the materials can be improved!
